“Each Saturday morning, I longed for the meals she served us on her crowded patio next to the farm. There were dogs and chickens at our feet, ants and flies abound. But, the food! The food was made in her kitchen by her hands. There was always a beautiful display of beans and rice, sometimes separately, other times together in the famous Costa Rican dish Gallo Pinto. Sometimes there was meat, other times a can of tuna was placed on the table. The salads were always fresh and delicious. She made fresh juices—carambola or piña. Doña Lydia made me feel at home. She created a space for me in her world. This visit left me wanting for more.”
